"In 2010, there were 125 copyright Examiners in the Registration Program (including the Literary Division, the Performing Arts Division, and the Visual Arts Division). In 2015, the number of copyright Examiners had decreased to 73 – a forty percent reduction. In Fiscal Year 2015, Congress provided the Office with $750,000 in spending authority (funds received from Office fees) to hire new Examiners. In FY 2015, we hired twelve new Examiners and are currently in the process of training them."

MT_standardsTake a look at Montana’s Arts Standards
S.gif
S.gif
On July 14, 2016, the Board of Public Education adopted new standards for the arts. For the first time, Montana now has discipline-specific standards in music, theatre, visual arts, media arts and dance. The new standards also include eleven unifying anchor standards across all five disciplines, and integrate Indian Education for All (IEFA). The new standards are to be implemented by all Montana public schools effective July 1, 2017. As new resources for implementing the standards are developed by the Montana Arts Council and the Office of Public Instruction, check back here to find multiple opportunities to learn about the new standards (you can start by attending the Montana Arts Education Leadership Summit in September, see above!)

Find the newly adopted standards on OPI’s website.

Arts Critical to STEM Leaning Says Secretary of Education

"There’s evidence that kids get better at math when they’ve taken classes that make the connection between STEM and the arts-and that when they’ve had certain courses in the arts, kids can grow in self-confidence, and in linguistic skills, as well as in creativity … (and) states now have wider options for the kind of interventions they can put in place-including options like the Turnaround Arts Initiative funded by the Department. I’ve had the opportunity to see struggling schools make real change by infusing the arts into their school models."
